crocodile

crocodile
It is a huge reptile having strongest jaws. It found in different places of the earth ex- Africa & amazon. If every thing that come in his jaws so, he never left him.

Etymology

There are several variant Greek forms of the word attested, including the later form κροκόδειλος (crocodeilos)found cited in many English reference works.[6] In the Koine Greek of Roman times, crocodilos and crocodeiloswould have been pronounced identically, and either or both may be the source of the Latinized form crocodīlus used by the ancient Romans. Crocodilos or crocodeilos is a compound of krokè("pebbles"), and drilos/dreilos ("worm"), although drilos is only attested as a colloquial term for "penis". It is ascribed to Herodotus, and supposedly describes the basking habits of the Egyptian crocodile.

Biology

Despite their prehistoric look, crocodiles are among the more biologically complex reptiles. Unlike other reptiles, a crocodile has a cerebral cortex, a four-chambered heart, and the functional equivalent of a diaphragm, by incorporating muscles used for aquatic locomotion into respiration.

Size

Several other large species can reach over 5.2 m (17 ft) long and weigh over 900 kg (2,000 lb). Crocodilians show pronounced sexual dimorphism, with males growing much larger and more rapidly than females.[21] Despite their large adult sizes, crocodiles start their lives at around 20 cm (7.9 in) long.

Teeth

Crocodiles are polyphyodonts and able to replace each of their 80 teeth up to 50 times in their 35 to 75-year lifespan. Next to the full grown tooth there are a small replacement tooth and aodontogenic stem cell in the dental lamina in standby that can be activated if required.

SAVE ANIMALS
It's super-easy to help animals, no matter how old you are. Check out how Save Animals to get a jump-start on making a huge difference in the lives of animal everywhere: Animals are alive for their own reasons, not to entertain us. Animals in movies, circuses, and zoos are denied everything that is natural and important to them. They will never be allowed to hang out with their families, graze, or do anything that they would do in the wild. Refuse to support this cruelty by never going to a zoo, marine park, or circus that uses animals. If your class is planning on dissecting any animal, ask your teacher for a humane alternative assignment, such as using a computer program to perform a virtual dissection. komodo dragon

komodo dragon
komodo dragon is a very rare reptile. It has strong smelling power. It found in Indonesia at komodo island. It  has thin tongue like snake.

Etymology

To the natives of Komodo Island, it is referred to as orabuaya darat (land crocodile), or biawak raksasa (giant monitor).

Diet & feeding

It is able to locate its prey using its keen sense of smell, which can locate a dead or dying animal from a range of up to 9.5 km (5.9 mi). Komodo dragons have been observed knocking down large pigs and deer with their strong tails.
Komodo dragons eat by tearing large chunks of flesh and swallowing them whole while holding the carcass down with their forelegs. For smaller prey up to the size of a goat, their loosely articulated jaws, flexible skulls, and expandable stomachs allow them to swallow prey whole. The vegetable contents of the stomach and intestines are typically avoided.

Ecology

They are capable of running rapidly in brief sprints up to 20 km/h (12 mph), diving up to 4.5 m (15 ft), and climbing trees proficiently when young through use of their strong claws. To catch out-of-reach prey, the Komodo dragon may stand on its hind legs and use its tail as a support. As it matures, its claws are used primarily as weapons, as its great size makes climbing impractical.

etymology

The derivation from Greek pan- ("all") and ther ("beast") may be folk etymology that led to many curious fables.[10]

The word "tiger" is traceable to the Latin word tigris, meaning "a spotted tigerhound of Actaeon". The Greek word tigris is possibly derived from a Persian source.

Subspecies

The Indochinese tiger (P. t. corbetti), also called Corbett's tiger, is found in CambodiaChinaLaosBurmaThailand, and Vietnam. These tigers are smaller and darker than Bengal tigers. Males weigh from 150–195 kg (330–430 lb), while females are smaller at 100–130 kg (220–290 lb).[4] Their preferred habitat is forests in mountainous or hilly regions. According to government estimates of national tiger populations, the subspecies numbers around a total of 350 individuals.[32] All existing populations are at extreme risk from poaching, prey depletion as a result of poaching of primary prey species such as deer and wild pigs, habitat fragmentation, and inbreeding. In Vietnam, almost three-quarters of the tigers killed provide stock for Chinese phar.

Subspecies

found many of these are too similar to be recognized as distinct at a molecular level. Following the research, the canonical Mammal Species of the World (3rd ed.) recognizes six subspecies, five of which are solely found in Latin America:

Argentine puma (Puma concolor cabrerae)
includes the previous subspecies and synonyms hudsonii and puma (Marcelli, 1922)
Costa Rican cougar (P. c. costaricensis)
Eastern South American cougar (P. c. anthonyi)
includes the previous subspecies and synonyms acrocodiaborbensiscapricornensisconcolor (Pelzeln, 1883), greeni, and nigra
North American cougar (P. c. couguar)
includes the previous subspecies and synonyms arundivagaaztecusbrownicalifornicacoryifloridanahippolestesimprocerakaibabensismayensismissoulensisolympus, oregonensisschorgeristanleyanavancouverensis, and youngi
Northern South American cougar (P. c. concolor)
includes the previous subspecies and synonyms bangsiincarumosgoodisoasoaranna, sussuaranasoderstromiisuçuaçuara, and wavula
Southern South American puma (P. c. puma)
includes the previous subspecies and synonyms araucanusconcolor (Gay, 1847), patagonicapearsoni, and puma (Trouessart, 1904)

The status of the Florida panther, here collapsed into the North American cougar, remains uncertain. It is still regularly listed as subspecies P. c. coryi in research works, including those directly concerned with its conservation.[32] Culver et al. noted low microsatellite variation in the Florida panther, possibly due to inbreeding;[30] responding to the research, one conservation team suggests, "the degree to which the scientific community has accepted the results of Culver et al. and the proposed change in taxonomy is not resolved at this time.

Mountain Lion skull
Mountain Lion Skull - Also known as puma, American lion, panther, and cougar, this giant cat makes its home in mountains, deserts and jungles throughout North and South America. The mountain lion feeds on a variety of small to large vertebrates including rabbits, deer, sheep and birds. Although the voice of the mountain lion is like that of a domestic cat, only louder, its mating call is a harsh scream.

Like other cats, snow leopards use scent marks to indicate their territories and common travel routes. These are most commonly produced by scraping the ground with the hind feet before depositing urine or scat, but they also spray urine onto sheltered patches of rock.[12]

Snow leopards are crepuscular, being most active at dawn and dusk.[13] They are known for being extremely secretive and well camouflaged.

Description of snow leopard

Description

The snow leopard has a short muzzle and domed forehead, containing unusually large nasal cavities that help the animal breathe the thin, cold air of their mountainous environment.

Reproduction and life cycle

The cubs leave the den when they are around two to four months of age, but remain with their mother until they become independent after around 18–22 months. Once independent, they may disperse over considerable distances, even crossing wide expanses of flat terrain to seek out new hunting grounds.

Ecology

Its geographic distribution runs from the Hindu Kush in eastern Afghanistan and the Syr Darya through the mountains of Pamir MountainsTian Shan,KarakoramKashmirKunlun, and the Himalaya to southern Siberia, where the range covers the Russian Altai mountainsSayanTannu-Ola mountainsand the mountains to the west of Lake Baikal. In Mongolia, it is found in the Mongolian and Gobi Altai and the Khangai Mountains. In Tibet, it is found up to the Altyn-Tagh in the north.

location of snow leopard

habitat
Snow leopards live in the high, rugged mountains of Central Asia. While their habitat range covers 2 million km2(approximately the size of Greenland or Mexico), there are only between 4,000 to 6,500 snow leopards left in the wild.
Their habitat extends through twelve countries: Afghanistan, Bhutan, ChinaIndia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. China is one of the most influential countries for our conservation efforts, as it contains as much as 60% of all snow leopard habitat areas.
