Black bear

Black bear
Black bear is a omnivores animal. It is the 3rd strongest bear in the world before grizzly and polar bear. It has sharp claws and they can bring dead even human beings.

Taxonomy and evolution

A small primitive bear called Ursus abstrusus is the oldest known North American fossil member of the genus Ursus, dated to 4.95 mya. This suggests that U. abstrusus may be the direct ancestor of the American black bear, which evolved in North America.

Current range and population

Black bears currently inhabit much of their original Canadian range, though they do not occur in the southern farmlands of AlbertaSaskatchewan, and Manitoba. They have been extinct in Prince Edward Island since 1937. The total Canadian black bear population is between 396,000 and 476,000.

Habitat

The adaptation to woodlands and thick vegetation in this species may have originally been due to the black bear having evolved alongside larger, more aggressive bear species, such as the extinct short-faced bear and the still living grizzly bear, that monopolized more open habitats  and the historic presence of larger predators such as Smilodon and the American lion that could have preyed on black bears. Although found in the largest numbers in wild, undisturbed areas and rural regions, black bears can adapt to surviving in some numbers in peri-urban regions as long as they contain easily accessible foods and some vegetative coverage.

Location

Behavior

American black bears tend to be territorial and non-gregarious in nature. However, at abundant food sources (i.e. spawning salmon or garbage dumps) black bears may congregate and dominance hierarchies form, with the largest, most powerful males dominating the most fruitful feeding spots. They mark their territories by rubbing their bodies against trees and clawing at the bark. Annual ranges held by mature male black bears tend to be very large but there is some variation.

Hibernation

Black bears enter their dens in October and November. Prior to that time, they can put on up to 30 pounds of body fat to get them through the seven months during which they fast. Hibernation in black bears typically lasts 3–5 months.During this time, their heart rate drops from 40–50 beats per minute to 8 beats per minute.

Great barracuda is a fast swimming hunting fish. It's eat small fishes like angelfish. It is 1.8 meters long . It can swim up to 25 m/h.

Appearance

Barracudas are elongated fish with powerful jaws. The lower jaw of the large mouth juts out beyond the upper. Barracudas possess strong, fang-like teeth that are unequal in size and set in sockets in the jaws and on the roof of the mouth. The head is quite large and is pointed and pike-like in appearance. The gill covers do not have spines and are covered with small scales. The two dorsal fins are widely separated, with the first having five spines and the second having one spine and 9 soft rays.

Smilodon

Smilodon
Smilodon was an animal who had 7 inches long canine. Smilodon extinct million years ago. It was live in a group . It was hunting like lions.

Etymology

Smilodon is not closely related to the tiger (or any other living felid); the latter belongs to subfamily Pantherinae, whereas Smilodon belongs to subfamily Machairodontinae. The name Smilodoncomes from Greekσμίλη, (smilē), "carving knife" + ὀδoύς (odoús), "tooth" (whose stem is odont-, as seen in the genitive case form ὀδόντοςodóntos).

Classification

The genus Smilodon was named and described by the Danish naturalist andpalaeontologist Peter Wilhelm Lund in 1842. He found the fossils of Smilodon populatorin caves near the small town of Lagoa Santa, in Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is grouped with several species of saber-toothed cats in the subfamily Machairodontinae within the family Felidae.

Skeleton

Diet and hunting

Smilodon was likely an ambush predator and concealed itself in dense vegetation. It probably used its great upper-body strength to wrestle prey to the ground, where its long canines could deliver a deep stabbing bite to the throat which would generally cut through the jugular vein and/or the trachea and thus kill the prey very quickly.

Inland taipan

 Inland taipan
Inland taipan is a most awful and dangerous in the world. It's poisonous than eastern brown snake. It's  live in western Australia.

Geographic range

The snake can also be found north of Lake Eyre and to the west of the split of the Murray RiverDarling River, and Murrumbidgee River.

Venom

The average quantity of venom delivered by this species is 44 mg and the maximum dose recorded is 110 mg. The median lethal dose (LD50) for mice is 2 μg/kg (ppb) for pure Taipoxin and 30 μg/kg (ppb) for the natural venom mixture. Its venom consists mostly ofneurotoxins.

Diet and behavior

The inland taipan consumes mostly rodents, other small mammals, and birds. Unlike other venomous snakes that strike with a single accurate bite then retreat to wait for the prey to die, the inland taipan is known to deliver up to seven venomous bites in a single attack.

Black rhino

Black rhino
Black rhino is a animal who is in number if endangered. Black rhino is a herbivores animal . Black rhino is the most endangered in the world . People kill them for their horns. It is a very dangerous animal .

Taxonomy

There is some confusion about what exactly Linnaeus conceived under this name as this species was probably based upon the skull of a single-horned Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), with a second horn artificially added by the collector. Such a skull is known to have existed and Linnaeus even mentioned India as origin of this species.

Evolution

Ancestors of the black and the white rhinoceros were present in Africa by the end of the Late Miocene about ten million years ago. The two species evolved from the common ancestral species Ceratotherium neumayri during this time. The clade comprising the genus Diceros is characterised by an increased adaptation to browsing. Between four and five million years ago, the black rhinoceros diverged from the white rhinoceros.

Distribution

The natural range of the black rhino included most of southern and eastern Africa, but it did not occur in the Congo Basin, thetropical rainforest areas along the Bight of Benin, the Ethiopian Highlands, and the Horn of Africa. Its former native occurrence in the extremely dry parts of the Kalahari desert of southwestern Botswana and northwestern South Africa is uncertain.

Behavior

The black rhino has a reputation for being extremely aggressive, and charges readily at perceived threats. They have even been observed to charge tree trunks and termite mounds. Black rhinos will fight each other, and they have the highest rates of mortal combat recorded for any mammal: about 50% of males and 30% of females die from combat-related injuries.

Arctic tern

Arctic tern
Arctic tern is a bird that makes world's largest migration . About 70,900 km . North pole to South pole. It eats fishes.

Taxonomy

While the Arctic Tern is similar to the Common and Roseate Terns, its colouring, profile, and call are slightly different. Compared to the Common Tern, it has a longer tail and mono-coloured bill, while the main differences from the Roseate are its slightly darker colour and longer wings. The Arctic Tern's call is more nasal and rasping than that of the Common, and is easily distinguishable from that of the Roseate.

Distribution and migration

The Arctic Tern is famous for its migration; it flies from its Arctic breeding grounds to the Antarctic and back again each year, the shortest distance between these areas being 19,000 km (12,000 mi). The long journey ensures that this bird sees two summers per year and more daylight than any other creature on the planet.

Ecology and behavior

Arctic Terns sometimes dip down to the surface of the water to catch prey close to the surface. They may also chase insects in the air when breeding. It is also thought that Arctic Terns may, in spite of their small size, occasionally engage in kleptoparasitism by swooping at birds so as to startle them into releasing their catches.

Conservation status

Arctic Terns are considered threatened or species of concern in certain states. They are also among the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds applies. The species reduced population in New England in the late nineteenth-century because of hunting for the millinery trade..

Reproduction

It is one of the most aggressive terns, fiercely defensive of its nest and young. It will attack humans and large predators, usually striking the top or back of the head. Although it is too small to cause serious injury to an animal of a human's size, it is still capable of drawing blood, and is capable of repelling many raptorial birds and smaller mammalian predators such as foxes and cats.
